স্ত্রীর বোন চায়ে তার

       ভুলে ঢেলেছিল কালি,

'শ্যালী' ব'লে ভর্ৎসনা

       করেছিল বনমালী।

এত বড়ো গালি শুনে

জ্ব'লে মরে মনাগুনে,

আফিম সে খাবে কিনা

       সাত মাস ভাবে খালি,

অথবা কি গঙ্গায়

       পোড়া দেহ দিবে ডালি।

কনে দেখা হয়ে গেছে, নাম তার চন্দনা;
তোমারে মানাবে ভায়া, অতিশয় মন্দ না।
লোকে বলে, খিট্‌খিটে,   মেজাজটা নয় মিঠে--
     দেবী ভেবে নেই তারে করিলে বা বন্দনা।
     কুঁজো হোক, কালো হোক, কালাও না, অন্ধ না।

WHEN THEY came and clamoured and surrounded me they hid thee from
my sight.
I thought I would bring to thee my gifts last of all.
Now that the day has waned, and they have taken their dues and left me alone,
I see thee standing at the door.
But I find I have no gift remaining to give, and I hold both my hands up to thee.
